I know I am not paying attention to fantasy much, but I liked the first law trilogy - it was almost as good as Richard Morgan's series. Does this follow directly on the First Law series, or do I have to read something in between to get to this stuff? ;-)

Honestly, I think you should read the three stand alone between First Law and Age of Madness. Its not mandatory and I think you would be fine with just jumping from one trilogy to the other - but there is a lot that happens in those books that helps the build up to the Age of Madness. Sooooo yes, read the three stand alones first
